About Norman guitars
Norman guitars are handcrafted in La Patrie, Quebec, Canada. Each model is made from tone woods carefully selected for the best sound and structural integrity.
The first Norman guitars were produced in the early 1970's. In the last thirty years, Norman's reputation for superb quality and excellent value has grown in a grassroots, word-of-mouth kind of way amongst musicians which has earned Norman’s world class guitars the distinction of ‘Canada's guitar'.
The B20 line is the foundation of all the Norman guitars. The solid spruce top and lacquer finish alone distinguish this guitar. The three-layer laminate of cherry wood used in the back and sides of the B20 produces a tone that sounds warmer than maple but brighter than a mahogany guitar. The B20’s tone works beautifully for recording and blends nicely when amplified on stage.
The B20 HG is the same guitar as the standard B20 but with a gorgeous high gloss finish. It is comprised of eight coats of lacquer which is buffed down to the equivalent of about six coats — a process that takes about eight days to complete.
800 Year Old Trees
Norman guitars feature either solid cedar or spruce tops. The wood used in these tops can be found only in cedar and spruce trees that have an average age of about 800 years. The tight, straight grain in this wood makes it strong in the direction of the string tension while at the same time flexible across the grain lines. It is this combination of rigidity and flexibility that gives the top its resonance. The vibration of the guitar top is the most crucial element of the sound.
Alcohol Lacquer
Norman guitars are finished with a special alcohol lacquer formula. This finish is light enough to allow the wood to breathe and vibrate freely. The top's resonating capacity actually improves as the guitar is played over an extended period of time. This gradual improvement in the response of the top is often referred to as "aging".
Hardwood Back & Sides
Only hard reflective wood is used in the back and sides of Norman guitars. Most models feature back and sides made using the superior technique of three layers of true hard woods. This special lamination retains all of the properties of superior tonewoods.
Neck
Norman necks are made from Honduras mahogany with rosewood fingerboard and bridge.
